#2. It’s Like a Fine Tea with Hints of Berries

Hmm, it’s like tea and has a scent of a bit of berries.

My coffee deck was getting almost empty, prompting me to shop around for new coffee beans. Then, I came across Kona coffee, which is one of the rarest coffees in the world in terms of total production yield. Among Hawaiian coffee, peaberry is one of the most unique and expensive types of coffee beans. Unlike the flat-sided pairs of regular beans, peaberry beans are small and round. This shape allows peaberries to roll more evenly during roasting, leading to a more consistent roast.

Last weekend, I headed to Kona Coffee Roasters located in the Midtown neighborhood and looked around to see what kinds of coffee beans they had. One that caught my eye was peaberry. The price of $49 for a pack of coffee beans sounds pricey, but I wanted to try it.

As I saw the tasting notes on the package—dried apricots, licorice, and hints of bergamot—I expected it to be a bit spicy and citrusy. With a brewing ratio of 1:15 using 16g of coffee, I brewed the coffee and finally tasted it. Once I finished brewing, I smelled it, and it was great. The coffee smelled sweet with hints of floral and fruity notes. When I took a sip, it literally felt like tea with some level of acidity, but not overwhelming.

This peaberry coffee offers a light and bright drinking experience, similar to a delicate tea. The high acidity adds a crisp, refreshing quality. I highly recommend this coffee to those who want a coffee with a light body, offering a refreshing and crisp flavor profile.
